Esquire's List of America's Best Bars 2008

After this month's issue of Esquire, I'm leaning towards never taking their suggestions anymore. Their June issue has a feature called 'Best Bars In America 2008' and in my humble opinion, the ones they chose for MA are crap. I'm sure that each of these bars will have their regulars - who will subsequently leave nasty comments for me here - but come on Best in America?? Also, for some odd reason, the bars on their website don't match the ones in print. Not sure how that happened - but someon...

List of Movies Added to Site

Hi Everyone, Just wanted to let those of you that read this blog via email or RSS that I've added a new widget to the upper left hand side of the blog that provides links all the movies that currently being filmed in the area. Hopefully that will make the information a little bit more accessible. My end goal is to create a bulletin board or forum section for this site that will allow everyone to post their celebrity sightings and/or questions (amongst other topics) in a more organized fashion ...

Brooks Brothers F&F 25% Off - Starts Today

For those of you that actually have to dress up for work everyday (thank goodness I work in an office alone most of the time when I'm not traveling) you might want to stock up on some shirts this weekend. Brooks Brothers is doing their Friends and Family weekend starting today 5/8 through Monday 5/12. I swear, my old roommate used to pretty much own that entire store in his wardrobe. He had a lot of good things to say, though, about those non-iron shirts that they have there. Which would be g...

Harvard Square Celebrates MayFair - 5/11

I'm not sure what the event organizers were thinking when they did this, but who knows - maybe there's a lot of folks out there who don't plan on spending Mother's Day with their mothers. Or perhaps there are a lot of mothers out there that would like to go to Harvard Square this Sunday and listen to some live music. The 25th Annual MayFair has been rescheduled and will be taking place this upcoming Sunday, May 11th in Harvard Square. The event features "six stages of LIVE entertainment, 30+ R...

Destination Alcatraz: Urban Race Challenge

Looking for something fun to do outdoors this Saturday? I got an email earlier this week about an event called Destination Alcatraz - some sort of scavenger hunt that will probably have you running around Boston all day. It'll give you and your friends a good excuse to get outside and enjoy the warm weather that we're finally having. ~~~~~~~~~ WHO: Boston urban thrivers who possess the brawn and brain to outrace their peers in a physical and mental contest to navigate Boston are encouraged ...

Huge Car Accident & Explosion In Allston

A huge accident took place about three hours ago in Packard's Corner at the intersection of Comm Ave and Brighton Ave. At around 7am, a medical delivery truck plowed through at least seven cars on Comm Ave before hitting another car head on and causing an explosion. Obviously if you need to drive in that direction, traffic is going to be a mess. I'm not sure if they've cleaned it up yet but if you were planning on going down in that direction - cancel your trip. Comm. Ave outbound has been clo...

Bye Bye Dainty Dot Building

Well it looks like the developer and the city have reached an agreement on what's going to happen to the Dainty Dot building in Chinatown. There were some objections to the original plan where critics didn't want such a tall building to be built. Anyway, an agreement was reached yesterday to lower the overall height of the building but a consequence of this agreement is that they're now going to be tearing down the original and starting from scratch. The original proposal involved saving part ...

Matt Light sure does like to do appearances at retail stores. Or maybe it's just my imagination. He did one about 6 months ago (here) and now he's got another one coming up tomorrow. The event starts at 5:30pm on May 8th. Click (here) for a craigslist listing that has more information if you don't feel like maximizing the picture and reading the small lettering. Movie About Paul Revere Filming This Fall

If you had to make a bet, how many movies do you think they'll film in Boston before 2008 is over? 15? 20? It was just announced that scouts are now looking for a location for a new movie about Paul Revere. Robin Dawson, former head of the Massachusetts Film Office, will be one of the producers of "The Ride," a feature film about the famous ride of Paul Revere. The director, Brian Ide, and other crew members were in Greater Boston recently to scout areas for filming. "The goal is to sho...

Free Yoga @ Copley Square - 5/8

I gave yoga a try for a little while during the winter. I was going to the 7am classes at my gym three times a week. They didn't seem that effective to me. I ended up concluding that an hour on the treadmill would probably do me more good. I'm more concerned about weightloss than I am flexibility. I may not be a yoga fan, but I am a Smart Water fan. To each his own. Those of you that are yoga people - you'll be happy to know that there's going to be a couple of free yoga classes this upcom...

More Ben Mezrich Movies on the Way

I still haven't seen it, but I will eventually (maybe when it's out on video). 21, the movie version of Ben Mezrich's book "Bringing Down the House" has brought in $100 million dollars so far. As a result, folks are now looking to turn some of his other books into movies as well. Emboldened by the box-office success of "21," billionaire Mark Cuban has bought the film rights to two more Ben Mezrich books. The owner of the Dallas Mavericks has optioned the Boston author's "Ugly Americans" and th...

Review: My Boltbus Experience

I'm feeling pretty ambivalent about this past weekend's Boltbus experience. I think the best way to sum it up is that the buses themselves are quite nice, but the customer service experience is horrible. I had purchased tickets to go to NYC on Friday on the 6:30pm bus and return on Sunday on the 5:30pm bus. So I arrived fairly early on Friday (5:40pm) because I didn't know what to expect. There is one terminal for Bolt Bus (terminal 21). Because I was almost 50 minutes early, there was no on...

Yo Yo Ma Coming to Boston - 5/18

Yo Yo Ma is one of the performers that is on my list to one day see live. Secret fact about me - I played the cello for seven years prior to coming to Boston for school. I figured a cello in a frat house wouldn't survive very long - so it'd be better to leave it at home. Sadly, I don't think I'll be in town the weekend that he's in Boston. This isn't Mr. Ma's first time in Boston, I think he comes through every couple of years to perform at Symphony Hall. It just always seems to be bad timi...

Kiehl's Opening In Burlington Mall - 5/10

I've been very impressed lately with the city of Burlington. I've only been there once or twice, but they've been in the "news" (or at least the stuff I read) fairly often lately. First off, it was all the new high end stores opening at the Burlington Mall. Then, the Pièce de résistance came when it was announced that H-Mart (the korean supermarket chain) was going to be opening a store there (here). Well, here's just one more reason to give Burlington props. They second free-standing Kieh...

Blog for Affected Financial District Restaurants

The debacle is dragging on, but at least it seems that it won't be as bad as the Globe had previously reported (here). Based on a Globe article yesterday, 300 of the 410 establishments that had their gas service restored. The utility said earlier in the week all customers should be back in service by today, but said yesterday that portions of the Financial District would remain out until tomorrow. One large customer, the 400-unit Devonshire high-rise apartments, has had service restored, b...

Dream Destinations: Lenox & Freedom Trail

A new book coming out today (May 1) called "Dream Destinations" is a compilation of the world's best vacation spots and two of them are MA destinations: Lenox, MA and The Freedom Trail. Lenox, the site of Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is mentioned as a top destination in the "Culture Vultures" category along with Giverny, France. The publication recommends history buffs explore Boston's Freedom Trail. It also touts Captain Cook's Polynesia and the Greek island of Cr...
